  1. a. Don't know. But the main cytoplasmic organelles were identified towards the end of the 19th century after improvements in the microscopic technique.

    b. Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, both German, in 1839.

    About 200 years after the microscope was invented and the first cells observed eg by Robert Hook and Van Leeuwenhoek they proposed the cell theory: all living things are composed of cells.
