I'd have to guess Joe Malone. I know that Newsy Lalonde scored 6 in the week before Joe scored 7 but I'll go with the scoring Machine Joe.

Hyland and Malone were on opposite teams(both in Montreal) . Malone's Canadiens team played their game before Hylands Wanderers team. Also, was this the first NHL game replacing the NHA?

You have it backwards, the Wanderers-Arenas game started first (that is why Dave Ritchie is credited with the first goal in NHL history)

However, a telephone call was made to Ottawa to inform NHL Commissioner Frank Calder that The Wanderers had won while the Canadiens/Senators game was still going on....Malone hadn't scored his 5th yet............so Hyland was officially first.
