Who sees that Geelong are not unbeatable, and how do you beat them?

It is very clear that they fold under REAL pressure. They overpossess and cough it up under pressure. Collingwood know how, and Hawthorn threw the game away last night.

Somebody said - "Ayres came out and said something like - "put simply we're a rabble out there, of course we give frees away - we back chat, we whinge and we're always doing silly stuff ". Under pressure they revert to type, it only takes a committed team to pressure them and they're gone.

  1. no Geelong isnt unbeatable, just really good!

i dont know how to beat them. thats up to the other teams but my general advice is speed, tactic and endurance - all that stuff.

  2. well, how would hawthorn beat geelong next time when they have Ling, Ablett, and a few others back in the side?

they were only vulnerable last night, and even then the cats were able to win

  3. well being a collingwood fan too i LOVED kicking their arses this year the cocky b******s lol I think they pay stupidly when they're under pressure. Like last night they were trying to do the old mark it at the 50 and play on but hawthorn would just clobber them. They need to stop handballing the thing and start kicking it, get it down the feild and have someone there to recieve it.

I hope last night opened their eyes to all the cocky stunts they pull coz the collingwood game sure didn't....can't wait to play them again in the finals! yay hehe enjoy the game at 3  : )

  4. **No team is unbeatable, even Geelong.

They're playing very well at the moment and other teams struggle to keep up with them.

If you keep in mind that in the last two weeks they have played second and third without several of their better, premiership players (against the Bulldogs they were without Ling, Ablett and Wojcinski and against Hawthorn they were without those three as well as Dasher Milburn and Chappy went out injured before half time) they have done very well to continue to beat these other good teams.**

  5. I'll correct you there!  They CAN fold under real pressure like any team!  They didn't last night but they wobbled a few times.  If you could get Hawthorn's 'zone' and combine it with Collingwood's 'choke the middle' (which is actually the old West Coast tactic - nothing new out of Tricky Micky), you could guarantee you'd win against them.

Trouble is the zone is a fifteen man play and the choke is a 12 man play .... so if you could get 27 on the field plus a couple of others to kick it to once you've got it .... you'd be a certainty :-)  [Little Edit: The choke is a 23 man play for Port Adelaide]

Ayres was referring to a team 10 years or so ago, but you're right - the way is to break their discipline.  The Pies are the only team who did that successfully.  Cats are so much more disciplined than any team on the comp - they're probably the only team that can break the Hawthorn zone when they do it well.

  6. Well, I do agree with some of your points, and they are a beatable team, they have come close to losing a couple of games this year (Freo, Hawthorn, etc), but I don't think they buckle under pressure all the time. I mean, I loved when Collingwood beat them, (and if we played like that every week, we'd be just as good as Geelong), but they played well against the Dogs, which was an intense contest for the first half of the game.

I suppose the only way to beat Geelong is by pressuring them, and using a very tough intensity, but, as you said, not just any team can do it, it takes a committed team. They do over possess at times, but I suppose it works for them. I just think it depends on what teams match up well against the Cats.

  7. Geelong are undefeatable no doubt about it

  8. they crack too like the time when collingwood beat them by nearly 100 points, it's more like they're imtimidating cause they win a few games and everyones scared of them, but if everyone puts effort into beating geelong they'll die.

  9. they arent unbeatable they are just showing other teams weaknesses

so they target that and beat them...with a team like the swams( who are going so bad now)  they showed off how they need taller players i think when they played them...maybe that was collingwood, but you get my point

  10. I am not sure what the point is here. Being in America, we can't see footy on the tele since the 2005 GF, so I do not have a valid opinion by my own sight.

Geelong cannot play great guns like the second half vs. Footscray, the qualifying final vs. North or the GF vs. Port every minute of every match as you request.

Beating Geelong would take 72 GF Carlton like team, one that was a total ball hog--so Geelong cannot have it, cannot handball all over the field and cannot score.

I just am not sure that a team could consistently play keep away long enough to beat Geelong. But I only know what I read on the Age and Herald Sun websites or listen to 3AW and the ABC on radio, since Andrew the Wanker doesn't consider television important to we Americans who love our footy.

  11. Does that mean that in the last 37 games Geelong have only played 2 committed teams because they have won 35 games. Whats the matter getting sick of Geelong winning , well get used to it buddy. Geelong have played the supposedly next best teams in the comp in the last 2 weeks who have put them under real pressure and thrown everything at them. Geelong have beaten them without our best player "Ablett", Ling , Wojo, Hawkins and last night Milburn and Chappy (who was starring at the time) for over half a game. You're probably one of those jealous Collingwood supporters who can't get over the fact  that the superior cats won the prelim because anybody could have beaten P.A in grannie. Well sorry Geelong cost collingwood a premiership -get over it Collingwood and stop whinging

  12. they didnt play as good as they usually do last night...hawthorn played their best. so geelong will win the GF if they are versing hawks

  13. No team is "unbeatable".

Just because Geelong had a bit of an off night - brought about by several factors the jealous types are lining up to put them down.

They still won last nights game. If I had to select a team to play for my life in this years grand final, I'd have no hesitation in selecting Geelong.

  14. Every team is beatable. Geelong isnt perfect yet.   i gotta say geelong got lucky last night after that miss (by roughhead i think). Although even if the scores were tied they would have still scored a goal in that short time left. Well freo tried injuring their top players like ablett and ling but hey they still lost (no offense to those fremantle supporters) pressure them and tackle em a h**l lot of times and cut them off the ball.

  15. The Cats are a very fit side and very disciplined as well and not many teams can go with them for 120minutes. The cats also have a star-studded team with Ablett, Ling, S. Johnson, Scarlett,  Bartel, Selwood and the underrated ones such as Corey, Enright, Gamble, Wojinski, Milburn, Chapman and Mackie. The cats aren't unbeatable but if they get an early lead they will hold it. The only way to beat them is Smash them in the 1st half and keep the intensity up for as long as possible or they will run over the top of you

  16. I think Geelong need to loose another game before the finals only because it seems to make them stronger and more detirmined. The game against Collingwood was a shocker and clearly Collingwood were the better team mentally and physicly. Geelong's performance went up from that game after the embarssment they felt after the loss. Even after the close 1 point win over Fremantle, Geelong stepped up but obviously one team cannot be invincible. Remember Essendon in 2000?
