Question:

Who sells the best High Octane fuel?

Ok, here is the story. I own a 2003 Harley Softail which requires high octane fuel. I generally get my gasoline at Sam's club, because it is less expensive, as I have a membership there. However, for awhile now, I have noticed my bike was running really poorly. It seemed to have changed in it's exhaust "note" from a nice Harley rumble to a brash and uneven sound. The performance also seemed bad, as it didn't seem to have the same power as when I bought it, requiring downshifts on hills where I never did before.

I checked the air cleaner, thinking it was dirty, and cleaned it to make sure. I checked the spark plugs, as well as adding fuel injector cleaner, just in case the injector(s) were dirty from winter storage. Nothing worked.

I added Octane additive on a whim and it fixed the problem. The bike runs great again. Obviously, Sams Club is selling regular gas as high octane. (bastids)

Who sells the best High Octane gasoline??

  1. In my area Sheetz sells that watered down gas that makes the bike run poor and burn gas quicker. I know exactly what you mean. Sunoco and BP are my preferred gas stations. Sunoco usually has 100 unleaded or 112 leaded. I use a gallon or two of that periodically as a cleaner. Results are instant. Regardless of what the Y!A know-it-alls say, I can feel the difference in performance and hear the difference in the rumble.

I've gotten the best mileage from BP93 gas.

  2. 91 is all I can get in my area. theres 1 independent station that has a separate pump for 91 & it runs better when I get my gas there.

I,m not sure that the pumps that add the additives for all 3 octanes always get the proper additive ratio when you only get 3 gallons.

I filled up at national chain stop & rob convienience store last week & had to set my advance back until I ran it out because of the detonation rattle. I always carry some booster capsules when on a trip so I dont have to keep changing the advance dial on my hi4.  it gets 4 or 5 less mpg when retarded.

  3. SHELL all the way. Unless your looking for a little more octane, then check your local airport or speciality gas stations for race fuel

  4. all American gas stations are switching to 10% ethanol this will be a problem on some vehicles that weren't designed for it

  5. I had 2  Ultra Classics and had the best luck with (Standard oil) now BP as it seemed to run better and got good mileage.......Just my experience.......................UJN

  6. Different areas of the country have different octanes... in my area all stations carry 93 octane (87, 89, 93) but I've been in areas where it's only 91. Plus, all fuels are now mandated to be up to 10 % ethanol which is ok (so we are told) for cars, but no one knows for air cooled motors... not even HD. I've been harping on this for some months now. No one can tell me what additive might help (you see, ethanol ups octane, but burns hotter). I carry STP octane boost where ever I go and put a capfull in even with 93 octane. I'm paranoid, with an '07 110 cu in SE... since we all know how hot the new HD's are.

  7. Here in california we have a few VP racing gas stations where you can get 100 octane out of the pump(4 nozzles) and if you go inside, you can fork over the big bucks for race gas(110 octane) and methanol.

Otherwise i would go with Shell. However, even the stations with cheap gas have to conform to minum standards.

  8. Ive Had My Best Luck With Shell Gasolines.  Sams Dosent Sell Regular Gas As Premium All Sams And Murphy USA Gases Are 10% Ethanol.
