Question:

Who should I hire to find out what work needs to be done to finish my parents' unfinished log cabin?

My father began building a home in the early 1980s. It is a 2-story log cabin kit with a basement. The main structure kit portion is complete, but he never finished the additional interior work to make the home suitable to live in. There is some electrical and plumbing work completed, but unfinished items I know of are flooring, drywall, kitchen cabinets and countertops, lighting. He did finish the master bedroom and bath enough so they can spend the night there occasionally. What type of professional would be the best to hire to get a complete list of the remaining items to be done so that the home can be considered finished and suitable to live in? My goal is to finish the dream home for my parents and help them move in since they are aging and are unable to complete it themselves. I just don't know where to start.

  1. Contact the log home vendor (are they still around after 20 years?) and ask them to recommend some carpenters in your area.  You want someone who understands the log home concept, as the home settles differently than other construction, and finish details are handled differently.

Kitchens installed against the exterior (or any log walls) offer a special challenge in the way they are anchored to the wall.

If the electrical and plumbing need to be completed here, make certain that you are satisfied with the approach and what the end results will be.

You are a gracious and thoughtful son to tackle this project for your parents.  Best wishes in your successful accomplishment.
