I am retired and have medicare a &b, health benefits through my old employer and AARP. Who is secondary in my case?

  1. your old employer's plan likely contains the information you seek -- call the plan and ask.


  2. Medicare is usually primary, but you STILL likely have to pay a copay.

  3. Does your old employer's plan pay anything or is it a Medicare "carve out"? Since Medicare is your primary, your old insurance is your secondary and AARP is your tertiary. If your secondary does not pick up your 20% co-insurance then it would go to your tertiary. If your AARP plan picks up the 20% co-insurance then they would pay. But first you must get a denial from your secondary and then send your Medicare EOB and your secondary EOB to your (AARP).

  4. My question would be, why are you paying AARP if your are covered by your old employer's health benefits?
