Question:

Who should be the next England captain?

When Michael Vaughan eventually hangs up his boots (or his dodgy knee hangs them up for him!)?

Paul Collingwood is the most likely to replace him, as he already leads the ODI and T20 teams.

But would you prefer someone else?

Kevin Pietersen?

Ian Bell?

Andrew Strauss?

Alistair Cook?

Andrew Flintoff?

One of the bowlers (Harmison perhaps!!!)?

Or maybe someone from outside the current set up? Rob Key? Rikki Clarke?

Who would you like to see in charge?

  1. Andrew Flintoff is a fantastic player, and a great asset to the team. I think he could do well as captain.

  2. No Paul Collingwood is the right choice.

  3. Andrew Stauss. He seems to have the calm and composed nature necessary for a catain.

  4. Ian Bell or Alaistar Cook

  5. Ian Bell. But, as he's already the ODI & 2020 captain it will be Paul Collingwood. That's ok though, he wold be my next choice.

  6. Paul Collingwood

  7. Monty Penesar, oh no wait, he is not White or part White so he can't, My Bad. lol.

  8. Andrew Flintoff.

  9. It's actually a little early to speculate, I presume that Vaughan see's the 2009 Ashes as his finale as player and captain, a lot can change in 16 months and a lot will depend on who's playing well.

Paul Collingwood will be 33 at that time and may be seen as too old for a new captain but he has done well in ODI cricket. Given Flintoff's injuries the ECB will be happy to see on the pitch to then saddle him with more workload is sheer stupidity but this is the ECB.

Bell and Cook have been earmarked as Future England captains both captained at U19 level, like Vaughan and Atherton had, but it may come a little early for them. I say this because Atherton also earmarked as a FEC was given the captaincy too early.

If you look at the last three appointents Nasser was 31, Vaughan was 28 and Collingwood was 30 then it looks KP and Strauss will be the right age. At the moment Strauss is more uncertain of a place in the team but he has experience of doing the job while KP is the second name on the team sheet but has no experience. In that case you have to go for KP and he'd be my choice.

If Rikki Clarke ever plays for England never mind captains the team I'll start supporting someone else. He's only captaining Derbyshire because he couldn't get in the Surrey team.

I can't see a bowler captaining England but I'd much prefer Ryan Sidebottom to Steve Harmison, he doesn't have Harmison's Test experience but he's a regular in the team and has a good attitude.

  10. Cook   joking  ,Kevin

  11. Nice Question mate.

First i would like to rule some people out, Steve Harmison, Andrew Flintoff and of course Key and Clarke. Harmison if picked would be the "softest" captain in the history of English cricket. Harmison does not have an inspiring bone in his body, he barely looks bothered to bowl himself, so if he was made captain i think i would jump off the nearest bridge lol :). Flintoff has too much to think about without having the captaincy too, he needs to focus on winning test matches for England or even just regaining full fitness, he doesn't need the captaincy burden on his shoulders as well.

ok, a great captain in my opinion is a player who all the players respect, a player who is inspiring for both the players and fans !! now Strauss is a good player and a very smart captain, BUT because of the fact that he is not guarenteed to be in the side, i would not have him as my captain. Cook is a future England captain, BUT he is too young IMO to take over from Vaughan. Pietersen is an ideal player to have as captain, he is talented, he is attacking as a player and as a person and he has the respect of the team, BUT to me he looks reluctant to be considered as the captain. Now KP has the talent to become one of the best of all time, BUT some great players, don't become great captains (Tendulkar and Lara). That leaves Paul Collingwood, he is such a great cricketer !!, good cricket brain after years in the county championship, he has experience of captaining the side, and of course he has the full respect of all the England players and fans. I think he would be the most suitable choice for captain.

My Choice (next 2 years)- Paul Collingwood

For the futute (3 years and beyond) Alistair Cook

  12. Paul Collingwood is good enough.  I see Bell getting it eventually, but it all depends on form.  Rob Key seems to be out of favour and I do not know why!!  Maddy is captaining Warwickshire this season and is showing some form with the bat.  Bowling captains are very rare.  Willis was the last one, maybe?

  13. Not an easy choice , I do think captaining at county level would be beneficial, but we struggle on this front so its would be a choice of KP , Colly or , if he were to go now then Chris Adams short term. With central contracts it does make it neigh on impossible now to captain your county and play for England but we do lose the development stage and this cant be good.

  14. Andrew Flintoff

  15. PAUL COLLINGWOOD.

  16. KEVIN PIETERSEN.

  17. I am hoping to see Kevin Pieterson get it and then pass it on to Ravi Bopara in about 5 years

  18. Freddy flintoff   i dont think it wil happen hel have to change alot of things like aspects of his life style  ,as its a pressure job .let him concentrate on batting and bowling ,Tendulkar gave up captaining cos it was to much pressure

Strauss don well  ,so if hes in the side hel prob get it

Alistair cook  looks a good candidate for the future

    ,

,lets hope M Vaughn stays captain for along time cos he is a wicked captain i like what he did to the Aussies lol
