It's a folk song that's been around for hundreds of years.  Written by slaves on a plantation somewhere, they didn't usually get songwriting credit.

Paul Robeson did the most famous RECORDED version of it, however, this song is what is known as a "N-e-g-r-o spiritual"...which means it's been passed down through so many generations that it's not known who actually wrote it. It's a folk song.
