1. As a former Marine myself, I do NOT trust recruiters. They will say anything to get you to sign up. I talked to 4 different recruiters before I found one who I thought was honest and helpful. Upon enlisting, I found out that even he lied about some things.

My biggest advice is do your homework, research everything yourself and DO NOT sign anything until you are well-informed and absolutely sure of your decision. Also, the Marine Corps has some great programs that a recruiter will normally not tell you about unless you ask first, because they just want you to enlist and ship you off.

If looking to go to college, look into the PLC program for becoming an officer. Also, don't forget about going Reserves. It's great if you want to stay at home, go to college at the same time, and be with your family and friends. I would definitely consider it.

  2. A recruiter is a recruiter, no matter what the service. Just know what you want to get out of the service before you walk in the door.

Some experiences my soldiers (Army) have said about recuiters from various branches.

-They will want to get you to sign that day

-Will do everything they can to make you feel guilty about not signing.

-Be careful about recruiters who offer special pay just for their service. All military are paid off the same publically available pay scale.

-Most will try to get you to get someone else to join. Sometimes by offering to advance you by bringing in two of your friends.

-Many will try to tell you that your benefits are transferrable to your family (they are not. your dependents may get benefits, but your grandma or little sister cannot unless they are court ordered dependents.)

-Be wary of any recruiter who talks bad about any other service. We are all in uniform doing very different jobs.

-Recruiters will often try to chide you as not being good enough to join their service. You need to prove it by signing up today and going to boot camp.

-Never go on any one persons word. It MUST be in WRITING and it MUST BE A PART OF THE CONTRACT or it is not legally binding. Anything you want must be in the contract. No service will "work it out later" if you are promised to do one thing to wait for something else.

(side note: it pays to 'shop around' in the military and talk to as many branches as possible before deciding on which service to join)

Hope this helps and I thank you for taking time to think about joining the miltiary. You are doing something that nearly all other of your country's citizens will not consider. Right now, you are elite.

  3. Don't be afarid that you might be put right into the service just because your going to see the recruiter. As long as you don't sign anything, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Make a list of questions and the best of luck to you.

  4. I have, but what do you want to know? lol, im sure there are millions who have, but do you have a more specific question?

Anyway, the marines want you to be marine, a tough hard working soldier. They wont hand out money (like the Army for instance). Anything you are awarded with from the Marines you have to earn. Nothing is given to you, except orders of course.

One good advice is, make sure what you choose is what you want. Not something that you feel you should do because you "owe" them something. You really dont owe anyone anything except two people, your parents. Paying bills and paying back friends is another thing though, marine recruiters or any recruiters are not your freinds, they are sales men getting more bodies in their branch.

Finally, take every last sentance they tell you with a grain of salt and make sure that what they tell you is in writing. Any claim they say you will get should be in BLACK AND WHITE on the contract. Dont sign the contract if what they tell you is not clearly marked on the contract.

    I wish you good luck.
