The AFL is the national competition (named as such in 1990) which was formerly the VFL - the name change reflecting the fact the competition was expanding beyond its Victorian origins. The VFL, however, was started back in 1896 when a number of clubs broke away from the then VFA to form their own league. Those clubs were Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne.
