The Iranians are not going to back down - they're just delaying the diplomatic options. Israel is about to get a new Prime Minister (probably a hardliner). And I believe Bush, as well as both presidential candidates have declared they will defend Israel...

It's probably a strong possibility.  I think it might take longer than just this year though.  Look how long it took for us to finally put our foot down with Iraq, and now the whole country's pitching a fit about an "unjust" war.  The politicians are going to be walking on eggshells with Iran, if for no other reason, because we're already stretched so thin with Iraq and Afghanistan.
