  1. Art school is not just about the monetary value, if it were it would suck, I agree.  I

It is about how you as a human individual are transformed from the art school experience, the colleagues you are with in art school, and the fact that afterwords no matter what other profession you go into, you have a component added to you that will advance you everywhere.

The benefits of art school are intangible, just like ''good will cannot be bought or sold to a company.  It comes from things like art school, creativity unknown to others.

  2. No, why would it be? Sure some are not as great as others no doubt, but there are plenty of good art schools, meant for *artistic* people who have a future in the arts.

I mean come on, someone who wants to be a graphic artist or work in film are not going to learn what they need at home. Not the same as someone who has a natural talent in painting and doesn't need anyone to 'teach' them how to have their talent...

  3. no... YOUR FACE IS A SCAM!

  4. The only people that think art school or ANY school is not worth their time does not know the value of an education and think too highly of themselves.

I know of a few art schools that I would not recommend, but as a graduate of an accredited private art college (graphic design and painting), I think it is very fundamental to an artist's growth creatively and financially. Sure, there are self-taught artists that produce great work, but they are few and far between. Art school gave me 1. great peers. They are now great professional contacts. 2. An excellent barometer of my success. You can't get good critiques from strangers and friends who all adore you and your work. It helps immensely to have people to tell you where you can improve and not fall for the typical "it's art, it-is-what-it-is bull." 3. A view into the art community I never knew existed.

Before art school, I thought I was a hotshot that could design anything but I could only get paid $10 an hour for my work. After art school and a few years of experience, I'm now a very humble hotshot that gets paid ten times more.

  5. It is what you make of it and how you approach it.  If it appears to be a scam, then leave it be.  If it is approached as a place to hone your craft, learn new ideas and techniques, help tap into your potential, and network with other creative types, then it takes on a whole different perspective.

  6. I don't think it's a scam.  People should take the time to look at art as something other then how it relates to school.  Art can open the mind to an awareness of beauty, it can be a poem without words.  Art does not imitate life, art is but an illusion which humanity has found to be an essential part of their lives.

Unfortunately, some teachers have not seen fit to explain the nature of their subject which in this case is art.

  7. I didn't attend one and I wouldn't say it is a scam. I think most schools offer a valid curriculum. My one comment about majoring in art is it is a lot like majoring in acting, music, film or History. Outside of going on teach there are way too many people out there that want to do this for a living and not enough ways to get a job.  It is hard to support yourself full time doing art. You have to really have a creative plan in order to make money at it. I know too many people with such degrees that are working at starbucks, McDonalds are doing work that is more in line with someone that does not have a college degree. Those that go in to get a degree like that that have no plan for how to apply the degree once they graduate are the ones that fail. No one knocks on your door and hands you $100 paycheck because you spent the afternoon creating art in your bedroom.  If you do choose to do any kind of art or music type degree, it is a good idea to either get a second degree in something unrelated or to do art as a minor. That way you are much more versatile and don't end up a starving artist and you have a back up plan to make a living.
