I just ate some "mystery meat" that was in the chinese food that was catered to our doctors office. It was labeled general chicken, the other kind didnt say what it was. My co worker and I cannot figure out if it pork or greasy chicken. Kinda make me wonder WHAT in the world it is exactly now. Being hungry the first few bites tasted good, after that it started tasting fatty and gross and I became nauseous and wanting to gag. UGH I'm drinking hot tea trying to get rid of the feeling!

Anyone else had this kind of experience???????? Do share

  1. i really do not like chinese food for this exact reason, girl!

i hate to generalize.. there may be some nice chinese restaurants out there with tasty food...minus the mystery meat but i have yet to find one.

even when i can tell what the meat is... for example with sweet and sour chicken.. it looks and tastes somewhat like chicken but it tastes old to me like chicken that was left opened in the freezer for months. i hope you have a better lunch tomorrow!!

  2. yeh but i think it was just nasty chicken...i dunno. I hope so!

  3. Chinese restaurants get a bad rap, for a lot of reasons - the accusations that they serve meat other than what is advertised is just the tip of the iceberg. Not to go too deeply into that, though, I'll address your questions of food quality.

The way that most Chinese restaurants make their living is by serving a bunch of different dishes using the same ingredients. This isn't intended as a criticism, just stating the facts. Take a look at a menu sometime, and think about how hard it is to choose the dish you want ... it's often because they are only slightly different from one another. Dishes may be differentiated only by the addition/removal of a certain type of sauce, or certain vegetables, or whatnot. This is done deliberately, as it gives the illusion that the restaurant serves a wide variety of food, without having to really expand the number of prep cooks, or the size of the facilities.

How does this relate to your question? Think about how you save money on food: buy in bulk, buy lower quality, and never waste food. This is what cheap restaurants do to stretch their dollars ... and it's hard to blame them. Restaurants generally run very, VERY close to the edge, financially and even a small downturn in business or an upturn in price can cause them to go out of business

So, let's say that a Chinese restaurant receives a shipment of bulk chicken, but it's a little bit old, or gross, or low-quality, or whatever. They can't really send it back, and financially they can't afford to buy more, so they just decide to use it. That means some people are getting bad (or at least borderline bad) food.

If you think this might be happening at the place you bought from, I'd avoid them in the future. Next time, ask around to your friends and try buying from a place with a good reputation. Also, it might not hurt to go to a more expensive restaurant next time. If their prices are higher (a little higher, not astronomically higher) it probably means they're buying better quality food.

  4. I think it really depends on your geographic location and how many restaurants you have in your area.  You really need to find ones with a fair reputation.  The chain operated restaurants like Panda Express generally cater the chinese food to American taste.  If you stumble into a more traditional chinese food restaurant, you may not like the taste!  Having said that, low quality meats should not be tolerated but do ask around and try again!

You mentioned that it was labeled "general chicken"

Could it be that one of your dishes are called "General Tao Chicken"?

    just a guess...

  5. I only eat at panda express.

    the others scare me

  6. It sucks that Chinese restaurants have gotten such a bad rep for that.  In other countries it is legal, but not here.  Any crazy person could do something like that though. Not just in chinese restaurants. Your restaurant is probably just serving low quality meat.
