  1. I've never been one to breed to a wild animal, or one that in my opinion should be. I can understand the desire to own at least in part such a magnificent animal as the wolf but I can't accept mixing their blood and in effect making them an everyday mutt.

There are so few pure wolves left in the world, I wish people would leave their blood lines pure. There are many dog breeds that either resemble the wolf or have a great deal of it in their lines.

  2. I have known many pure wolfs as well as hybrids I found the pure wolfs to be more sound of mind for some reason. Most the hybrids although very beautiful seem to be a little more unstable in there mind set.Real wolfs are shy and don't like change so when you mix them and then try to treat the hybrid as a normal dog they can be very skittish and snappy. So as with many breeds they should only be in the hands of people who know how to properly socialize and train them.Tilks Mom

  3. Wolves aren't dogs, not domesticated. I don't know much about wolf dog hybrids but I guess as long as it's done for a good reason and by a knowledgeable person then I'd be fine with it. Many people just want to own wolves thinking they can treat them near enough the same as a domesticated dog.

  4. Wolf hybrids can go from acting like dogs to acting like wolves in an instant.  When the wolf instincts kick in any small animal or child can become prey.  They are known to completely destroy the inside of a house and furniture.  Wolf hybrids should be spayed or neutered to prevent any future generations.  People who own them should be required to have very secure fencing to contain them.  The effectiveness of rabies vaccines is not known with wolves so they must be considered not vaccinated.  People should not own wolves and wolf hybrids as pets any more than they should own mountain lions or bears as pets.  The breeding of wolf hybrids should be stopped and wolves should be wolves,  not mixed with dogs to make a designer pet.  Designer pets is what a wolf hybrid is.  Dangerous designer pets that appeal to people who would never consider a maltipoo or puggle.

  5. It's a controversial issue.  I grew up with pet coyotes (pure, not hybrids).  Compared to coyotes wolves are laid back.  But they are still pretty jumpy and nervous compared to the average dog.  Personally, I can't really see the advantage to diluting what a wolf is by crossing in dog genes.  If you want a wolf, get a wolf.  If that timid nervous disposition is not pleasing, get a husky or malamute instead. There has been some interesting research in the inheritance of temperament and coat type.  Erik Zimen crossed wolves to large standard black poodles and called them "Puwos".  The F1 puwos have wolf conformation and head shape and are black in color with poodle coats and big round (poodle) yellow (wolf) eyes. F1s were more timid that normal poodles but not as much so as pure wolves. Crossing F1 x F1 produced the F2 generation, and they were all over the board in terms of traits - ears up, ears down, wooly coat, wolflike coat, wiry coat, agouti coloring, black, timid, bold, etc.  The ones that happened to look more like wolves didn't necessarily have a wolflike temperament.

  6. I think the wolf hybrids  can become very unpredictable animals. The more wolf % in the animal make them less domesticated.I do know some people own and breed them but from what I have heard this is the case.It isn't so much unpredictable as it is they act more like a wild dog would so it is unacceptable behavior.

  7. It's wrong. Wolves are wild animals. They need to be treated and fed differently. And mixing a little dog in there won't change that. Irresponsible people buy these hybrids because they think it's cool. Then, they make a mistake somewhere and someone gets hurt. Professionals are the only ones that should be dealing with wild animals.
