I am definately not a touchy feely type of person. I am one of the most practical people you will meet.

I have first hand experience working at shelters and see the pain both animals and shelter workers have to go through.

Watching dogs go insane inside their cages.

Putting down perfectly good pets day after day.

It's not easy.

Why protect pet shops? They are just using animals for profit. Don't waste your time defending them.

Why do you think they put the dogs and cats in the window? It's a marketing strategy to tempt passers-by into making a spur of the moment decision.

Why should the community pay the price for the pet shops to make profit; the community is left to deal with the millions of animals dumped year after year, all so pet shops can continue earning profit? I think you'll agree this is ridiculous.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I doubt you fully understand the issue.

  1. Why don't you give some reasons and examples?

If they are taking care of the pets then let them sell them.

If the shop can't provide for the animals then shut them down.

  2. i do

  3. wuts a puppy mill

  4. What about birds, rodents, and reptiles?

The same issues go for them as for the dogs and cats.

Best thing to do is NEVER shop at stores that have animals.  It's worth paying an extra 50 cents for crappy dog food to go somewhere else to get it.

That goes for Walmart.  They sell fish.

Pay the extra 38 cents for toilet paper.  It's worth it.

  5. not really because selling cats and dogs is the reason for calling them PET shops...yes most of them have fish and birds and hamsters and more but the main animals are cats and dogs...

  6. I do, but I don't think some people on here understand why pet shops should stop selling pets.

Its not because they mistreat them. Its just the fact that there are too many of them.

ALL pet shops get their dogs and cats from puppy mills and irresponsible BYB. ALL of them. I don't care what anyone says.  A responsible breeder, only breeding to better the animal, would NEVER give their animals to a pet store to sell. NEVER.

Puppy mills and BYB don't exactly mistreat their animals. there are several very large, corporate puppy mills. They treat the animals fine, but it is the point that they breed ONLY for money.

7-10 MILLION animals a year are euthanized in the USA alone, simply because there are not enough homes for them. That is why people need to stop breeding! Only responsible breeder with expertise in the animals they breed should be allowed to breed. These responsible breeders either show or work their animals. The animals go through NUMEROUS health exams before being bred. They have one or two litters a year, MAYBE. Responsible breeders NEVER make money off of their animals, and they only breed the top specimens of the breed. This should be the only reason that people breed.

When you have people selling puppys and kittens to pet stores, they are breeding these animals for profit only. these people have NUMEROUS litters per year! For every puppy or kitten bought from a pet shop, a dog or a cat is euthanized in a shelter. And YES, kittens and puppies are killed just as often as adult dogs are in shelters. My cat was a little white kitten with 1 blue eye and 1 green eye. He is from a shelter. Because of the large numbers of animals being brough in, there was not enough room for him, and he was ONE day away from being euthanized.  A little fluffy white kitten.

So THAT is why pet shops NEED to stop selling puppies and kittens. It isn't just because they treat them bad (although most do), it's because there are too many, and too many animals are killed each year, so we need to do something to stop the breeding!

If people want cats or dogs, they need to go to a shelter and ADOPT, SAVING a LIFE!! Animals are cheaper from shelters, they are already fixed, they come with all their vacinations up to date, plus most get one free vet visit! Where can you find a better deal then that! You give a homeless animal a loving life, you save it from being euthanized, and most of your medical needs are taken care of!

EDIT:  I see some people saying that not all pet shops buy from puppy mills. You are right, not all of them do. But those that don't buy from irresponsible BYB breeders only out to make a profit, which IMHO are just as bad as puppy mills. As I said before, NO RESPONSIBLE breeder would give their puppies to a pet shop. If they do, they are NOT a good breeder and should NOT be breeding!!

  7. Yes, but they won't be.

How about this, for those who think it's right?

Next to the cash register is a pamphlet that allows you to take credit out on a dog, like a credit card, so you're able to pay off your $1500.00 pooch.

Now, if you can't shell out the money to buy the dog in the first place, how can you possibly be able to afford vet bills?  Oh that's right, you can't.

So, it's wrong if you can't afford to buy a pet, or take care of it, but it happens everyday.

Further, these animals are inbred which causes painful, burdensome, and EXPENSIVE medical conditions, due to poor breeding.

It's not controlled and these people have no one to answer to.

  8. I wish they would.

"Why don't you give some reasons and examples?"

The answer to this would be 'Puppy mills'.

  9. I do.

However... I work at a pet store and we sell kittens.  BUT, we don't pay money for them; they come from families who have 'accident' kittens.  Since we don't give the people money for their kittens, we don't get people breeding them for money which leads to mill-like situations.

I still think people should get their animals fixed, though.  Here in Victoria there is a 'kitten crisis'... The SPCA and other animal shelters are having to turn away kittens because they have too many dropped off!

I think if people are looking to buy puppies, they should first look to an animal shelter or a certified breeder.  If people want to buy kittens, they should always check local animal shelters / SPCA's first!

  10. I think they should be banned only if they acquire them from puppy/kitty mills. Other than that, they should be allowed. Just remember that not all pet shops get there animals from mills.

  11. I definitely do, but just saying that won't make our fantasies come true... sigh.

All the animals I've ever owned have been adopted from friends, family, or a humane society.

  12. That's too simplistic.  What they should be is prohibited from selling puppy mill puppies.  It would also help if *existing* laws were actually enforced; they're not because retailers and breeders make large donations to whoever is in power, so the state agencies stay off their backs.

  13. You have to get the dog or cat from somewhere.  Is this another sinister takeover by the Evil Empire, corporate giant Wal-Mart?  SAM WALTON! I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE!!

  14. I sure do it is so cruel those animals in them cages & half of the time there water bowls are empty.

  15. yes because it is cruel to the animals

  16. Well thats not fair; cats and dogs are no different from the birds and hamsters etc sold at stores.

  17. Why? So that they can be on the streets alone with no one to care for them, love them feed them? yeah it sucks to keep them in a cage but eventually they take them out, and give them to a more than likely loving family!

  18. i do. or at least until all the animals in shelter have homes, which is really unlikely to happen.

i feel really bad for them whenever i go into one. they don't get fresh air and who knows how the employees treat them.

breeders should be banned to because they make a huge profit.

people really need to start adopting dogs.

  19. No. The government doesn't have a right to ban all stores from selling cats and dogs just because some aren't careful of where the animals come from. People are too quick to look to the government for help when instead they should look to themselves and their neighbors. If there's a store in your neighborhood that sells cats and dogs, first find out where they are getting the animals. If they are coming from mills, try starting a grassroots campaign to get the store to stop giving money to the mills; involve your friends and neighbors. Start a website and get help from outside sources.

  20. we get our dogs from the shelters.

  21. WOW...... that is a waste of 5pts. No they shouldnt. Why would they? I dont want to hear about dogs and cats have feelings too..... Deal with it.
