Depends on your idea of what 'real' is... did the movie accurately reflect real events? No. Was it based on a set of events that people perceived as real (whether they were real or not, the perceptions were there)? Yes.

People did actually die there. That part was real.

Is 'real' the result of perception ("real to me"), or in a more absolute sense ("facts & figures")? In either case, the only people who really know were the ones there.

it was based on real events that happend. but most of it was in fact exagerated. there is such thing as possestions, excersism. but it all is based on what you believe

i saw an interview with one of the family members years ago and according to him the majority of the film did actually take place.

I believe... that the Lutz family studied the occult and fashioned their own hoax.

The only truth was that Ron DeFeo killed his entire family in the house. It was not random, he had a history of violent behavior. And he was so greedy that he wanted all the family money to himself instead of sharing it with his siblings. Everyone that knew that family was not surprised.
