But . . . the world champions didn't once beat the all blacks last year.

The only team they played at the world cup who has actually ever once beaten them, like ever beaten them, was England !

The only country that initially had an easier draw in the WC was NZ. England probably had the hardest and easily did better than all others. The Poms were oh so close to winning the final. The WC was all about England, Argentina and Fiji.

Can't stand people talking up the Bokke simply because they won the WC. They are a much better team than their WC performance suggests - last years super 14 proved the power of RSA rugby, both of the teams in the final could have won the RWC.

Pretty sure all RSA fans would have preferred to have beaten the two other tri-nations teams to win the world cup. They would have had to show the world just how good they are. Sadly Australia and NZ were too useless to come to the party!

I don't think the Springboks are the best team in the world. The year the green monster clean sweeps the tri-nations championship and lifts the world cup I will have to change my mind.

I can't wait for the tri series next season and the Mandela Plate.  Australia has a new coach and key players have retired.  Bring on the Boks.  Now Matfield's gone to France with George Gregan, it will make for an interesting game.

the  springboks    and  newzealand  are  the  two  top  teams.doesnt  really  matter  who  is  the  best.  justa  pity  the  didnt  meet  in  the  world  cup  final.   in  any  game  it  would  just  be   refereeing  decisions  that  would  split  them.

best team in the world? probably not.  Holders of the World Cup? definitely.  The boks are definitely a class side with lots of quality players.  I'm hesitant to name them the best side in the world just yet.  They have yet to face the All Blacks.  When and if they can manage to beat them then i'll concede that the boks are the best.

The IRB world rankings are a good measurement for teams, however, when they are looked at just after a world cup, they are not as accurate as in between world cups when teams have had to play test matches

I don't.   S.A. only played a couple of the best last year.   The NZ All Blacks played and won against more countries so they are still the best.     07 the AB's only lost once to Oz and France in the RWC semi.     They beat S.A. twice alone.

By winning the 2007 World Cup, the Springboks are the best Rugby team in the World.

That is the yard stick in which we rate the best side in the world for 4 years. Now the All Blacks could win every game they play in 2008 and be rated the No.1 side for the year.

However being rated No 1 in the world for 2008, doesn't amount to a hill of beans when you have again failed to reach the pinacle  of Rugby. No one remembers being No1 in 05 06 and 07.  The World Cup is the Olympics for Rugby and I believe that tag of being the best Rugby team in the world is carried by the Springboks.

World Cup winners and top of the IRB-rankings. Like it or not, the statistics say the Boks are. ANd most of the top players in the world play for thre Springboks. Matfield, Habana, Rossouw, B Botha... I do think that John Smit is a crappy captain though...
