  1. The above posters are right on.  Without trains the highways would be so choked it would be nearly impossible to travel not to mention the amount of additional and astronomical pollution that would result from such.

  2. Excuse me, but, that is like asking, "Who needs oxygen?"

Of all components that comprise transportation infrastructure, railroads are, and have always been, and likely shall forever be the most efficient and vital link in the game plan for the transportation industry, and by extension, the economy of the planet as a whole.

So, when next you sit down to a meal, consider you probably wouldn't be eating it, save for railroads.  Come to think of it, you probably wouldn't have a chair or table either, or silverware, dishes, ...............

  3. Hey Aerepun. Consider the grains that have to be moved through this country. Moved from the agricultural regions to either coast, or for processing here. Wheat is a good example. A truck can haul from 26 to 40 tons on the highway. One railroad car can carry 100 to 110 tons. A typical wheat train hauls close to 110 cars. A conservative estimate would be, that, that one train has taken 260 trucks off the highway. And can haul the same load for much less fuel. In addition to wheat, there's corn, soybeans, barley, potatoes - nearly everything that comes out of a field. And coal, iron, copper, and all other minerals. If there weren't railroads, we couldn't build enough roads for all the trucks.

  4. In terms of cost per ton, per mile, there is NO better way to ship many kinds of commodities.  We'd come to a standstill with out freight rail.  How many tractor trailor loads would equal an 80 car grain or rock train ?  Think of the big picture!

And NOW with the peak oil issue, how viable are trucks for long term freight hauling of bulk products?

  5. You must think that there is a better way to ship things.  Why dont you tell us how it is.  If the railroads go away, then you will be gridlocked in trafiic everyday.  Everything in your house, or apt, or even everything that you eat was on a train at one time.

  6. They are right, and trains use 1/3 the deisel fuel or less to move a ton of freight one mile than a semi truck. so the environment desperately needs as many items moved by rail as possible.

And consider that there are far fewer deaths for hundred thousand ton miles of freight moved by rail then truck so you and your family need trains to keep the highways safer.

As for the Rail Corp of which you speak, if one company goes broke there are always others to move in and fill the void.

Rail corportations rarely go broke because of lack of business but instead of bad business decisions.

  7. you obviously have no idea how much stuff still gets transported by rail. i guess you have a better way of transporting hundreds of thousands of tons cross country in a hurry at one time..
