Question:

Who to address cover letter to if I only have a first name?

I am responding to a job posting I found on Craigslist, but all I have is the hiring manager's FIRST name. I went to their website, and everyone's first names only are listed. I really hate to say "Dear Sir" and doubt it would look professional to write "Dear Bob". Any other suggestions?

  1. "Dear Sir" is certainly acceptable in business letters.  Another option is "To Whom It May Concern," but that may seem impersonal if you have at least some information.  I would avoid addressing your potential boss by his first name until he tells you otherwise.

  2. You can use their position.

    "To: Hiring Manager" company name.

    then

" Dear Sir"  or "Dear Madam"
