I was just wondering who gets the final say in naming a child. Say if the mom and dad are in the hospital and they are fiercly arguing over names and cannot decide, and wont settle for one, who gets to choose? Who does the person filling out the birth certificate have to listen to?

im not having a child, and have never had one. i have just been wondering about this forever haha.

  1. The woman get to name the child it dont matter what the father says cause she birthed it not him lol  Trust me I have 2 boys i know

  2. My personal feeling is that the mother has the final say. She has carried the baby for 9 months and gone through the labor or the c-section.  All the mother has to do is fill out the birth certificate in pen when the dad goes down to the cafeteria to eat.

I did let my husband have input into naming all three of our children...including the 2 born before we married. I let him name our older son. Our daughter has his late mother's first name, and I picked the middle name. Our youngest son I picked 2 names ( first and middle) that I liked and let him choose between the 2.

  3. My guess is the mom.  When you are the one who carries the baby and has to go through the birth, I guess the person with the gift certificate would go with her.

  4. dad

  5. The Mom...because she usually fills out the paperwork and birth certificate.

  6. The mom.

  7. well the mom and dad are stupid because they have 9 months to name the child and ultimately they'll have to come to an agreement. some think just cuz the mom is carrying the child that she gets all the say and thats not true.

  8. The mom fills out the birthcertificate and signs the papers if they aren't married so mom gets final say in that case.  When married it is still usually mom that fills out all paperwork including the birthcertificate so really whatever is put down is the name the baby is given. The birthcerficate information comes from the paperwork that mom (or whoever) fills out after delivery before they are released from the hospital.
