Wanamaker was the man who got the PGA off the ground, inviting 35 professional golfers of the day to a lunch at the Taplow Club in New York for a meeting in January, 1916. That get-together resulted in the formation of the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA). During the meeting, Wanamaker suggested that the new organisation should include an annual tournament, and offered to put up $2,500 and various trophies and medals as part of the prize fund. Wanamaker’s offer was accepted, and seven months later, the first PGA Championship was played at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York.
