  1. the correct answer is david thompson and david thompson went to NC State. Jordan was gonna go to NC State too, but was convinced otherwise by Dean Smith and chose UNC instead.

    excerpts from links below.

The UNC recruiters got to Jordan early -- they thought he looked like "an average ACC player" -- so as to counter the attentions of, among others, South Carolina, which entertained Jordan at the governor's mansion in Columbia. As it turned out, the Carolina coaches had some convincing to do. "Growing up, I hated North Carolina," Jordan says. "I was a State fan; David Thompson was the man. My mom liked Phil Ford, but I couldn't stand him or any of them Carolina guys. I rooted for Marquette in the '77 championship game.My mom got mad."

"David Thompson's remarkable 44-inch vertical leap and extraordinary athletic skills earned him the nickname 'The Skywalker' and more awards than he could possibly know what to do with. He attained the status of a truly great sportsman, and was even Michael Jordan's childhood hero."

he also idolized Julius Erving who went to UMass.
