In Surah 20, 90-100, we find the story of "The Golden Calf." Verse 20.95 tells of "Samiri," who was one of the main instigators to promote shirk,
Surah20.95. (Moses turned to the Samiri and) said: "What is the matter with you, O Samiri, (that you did such a monstrous thing)?"
I have read from various sources that Samiri was a "Samaritan," from Samaria. The Samaritans were known to Muhammed in his time who worshiped animal idols and poured out libations to them on their holy mountain.
The problem with this is that the Samaritans did not exist until about 900 years later. They were descendants of Jews that inter-married with people, (Phoenicians), that worshipped other gods, (Baal), and lived in the northern part of Israel when the Jewish Kingdom was split in two after King Soloman's death.
Can anyone explain this? Again, who was this Samiri?
