  1. Seattle Slew was the 1977 Triple Crown Winner. amazing horse. the most expensive stallion of all time. his gene's are pure gold. check out his bio at http://www.spiletta.com/UTHOF/seattlesle...

a horse over the age of 10 is the best option for a show jumper. the horse is more mature and won't panic as much as a younger horse. the average age of many successful show jumpers is 13-15. 16 years old is perfectly fine.

  2. I don't know why she is selling so cheap, but it isn't her bloodlines.  I watched Seattle Slew win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and then go on to take the Belmont Stakes, making him the Triple Crown winner back in the 70s...so, yes, he was good.

Horses continue to jump well into their twenties if they are sound.

  3. Seattle Slew wasn't just a 'racehorse' he was a triple crown winner!  A Grade one stakes winning horse - the epitome of the term "race horse".

He wasn't as successful as some others in breeding, but more succuessful than many.

I wouldn't think 16 is too old for a horse to showjump if it's been well cared for - however, to start a horse jumping at that age and expect her to go big time, probably won't happen.  If she's been jumping a lot of years, I'll bet she's sustained some damage in her joints.

BUT - if she's sound she could be used as experience for you to get started.

If the horse were a well trained, healthy show jumping horse, she'd be worth more than $400.  It's likely she's either been hurt or used up if she has been jumping.  If she hasn't jumped, she probably hasn't had much done with her to be worth only $400.

Seattle Slew was a very nice-looking bay horse.  His get are pretty nice looking too.

If you are young, which you probably are if you don't remember Seattle Slew's wins - and this mare has jumping experience, she'll probably teach you a little something and be a good horse to get started on.

I bred my TB mare to Ocala Slew - Seattle Slew's son, but she didn't catch.....

    Have fun!

  4. Seattle Slew was a Triple Corwn winner.

There have only been 11 horses who have done that.

So yeah he was something special.

Jumping a horse at 16 would be hard on them. She should be good for light jumping. However you need to have her vetted and make sure.

Many horses comming off the track are not sound for jumping. They may have had injuries in the past that make them ok for flat work but not jumping.

If she has been doing some jumping she should be fine to go as long as she is comfortable doing the work. Many of the top jumpers are about that age.
