  1. A correction to the people above Elizabeth II became monarch in February 1952 and Bradman was awarded the knighthood in 1949 New Year's Honours List so it was in fact George VI who bestowed the honour to Bradman. He was awarded it because of his "services over many years as cricketer and captain of the Australian Test Team and for public services in several directions."

  2. Sir Donald Bradman was knighted in 1949, the year of his retirement from international cricket..He was given his knighthood for his services to Australian cricket...

He is the only Australian to receive knighthood..

He is one of the biggest things in Australian cricket and will always be known as the best ever cricker. He retired with an average of 99.94...

He represented Australia for 20 years, playing 52 Tests from 1928/29-1948..

You can get all the info on The Don in here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Brad...

  3. HRH Queen Elizabeth knighted Bradman & yes, he is the only Australian cricketer knighted. The reason we don't have more is because we replaced the British awards with our own order of Australia awards  some years  ago. There are many who undoubtedly would have received the award had it not have been changed,  Benaud for one.(God forbid, Lawry just crossed my mind! lol)

  4. The only part of your Q the first answerer left out was who actually knighted Bradman. It was Queen Elizabeth II, the present monarch.

  5. Donald Bradman was awarded his CBE (Commander of the (Order of the) British Empire) and made a Knight Bachelor on 01 Jan 1949.

And he is the only Australian cricketer to be knighted, but it is said Bill Woodfull turned down knighthood. And Kiwi Richard Hadlee was knighted on 16 June 1990.

the term 'Don Bradman' had become a generic term for excellence

    edit___

since the debate of who knighted Sir Don continues,

It was King George VI who knighted Bradman and it was conferred upon Sir Don by William John McKell , Governor-General of Australia,  at an investiture ceremony at Parliament House in Melbourne on 15 March 1949.
