  1. In 2006, the London consulting and research firm ArkSports Limited conducted a study that measured factors including the number of annual sports events held, major events held or won from 2002 until 2010, facilities, transport, accommodation, government support, weather, tourism, legacy, public sports interest, and quality of life.

In addition to measuring the factors noted above, ArkSports also polled fifty executives from the sports events industry, including major sponsors.

ArkSports reported that Melbourne, Australia is the "world's top city for sports events."  In its press release, it also described the findings as determining the "Ultimate Sports City" in terms of hosting international major events.  The media have interpreted that finding and coined the phrase, "The Sporting Capital of the World."

Melbourne topped the rankings in several sections, including level of public interest in events, major events held or won (2002-2012), facilities, and government support. It came in second in the majority of others, including number of annual events held, weather, and legacy. Paris and Sydney tied for second.
