    It`s hard to choose one person to name as the world`s best player, because there`s so many things to take into account. A lot of the chess Greats are no longer alive, and we only have their game records to judge by. Most of the great players haven`t played against eachother, which would be the only way to judge fairly (and even then, it wouldn`t be definitive). And if you take into account the gradual change of the game since its creation, it`s next to impossible to judge the skills levels of players from different eras.

    Plus, how do you judge who is the best? By the number of tournaments they`ve won? How much they win? The cleverness and ingenuity of their moves?

    It`s all arbitrary, and there`s no real answer to your question. But the Wikipedia article WILL give you a general idea.
