Ruffian.  A filly with too much guts and heart to ever give up the lead.

secretariat .  he was in another stratosphere.  holds the record for fastest time in the Kentucky derby and Belmont stakes.  and unofficially the Preakness if not for a stop watch malfunction.  what he did in the Belmont went above and beyond what anyone thought was possible for a creature made of flesh and blood to accomplish.  he ran more like an ummm tremendous machine. no horse before during or after can ever compare to his excellence.

also ive seen some names posted here that are just utterly ridiculous.  barbaro?? wtf i mean ya i was a fan of his too but to be mentioned with the greatest, that's a joke.  winning the Kentucky derby then breaking down in the Preakness does not define greatness.  besides ill take smarty jones over barbaro any day. for me the best horse of the 2000s is easily Ghostzapper.  he was awesome. and of all the horses in the world i actually saw someone mention FUNNY CIDE. hahaha. he wasn't even horse of the year. get serious.

That is too subbjective a question. You should have asked who was the greatest American horse, or the greatest miler, or the greatest turf horse, or the greatest National Hunt horse, etc.

You guys also need to look outside your own shores! There is a whole world full of amazing horses out there if you actually look!

It's hard to pick on greatest race horse out of the thousands that have raced. Each truly great horse has done so much for the sport in different ways that it is very difficult to choose. I myself would have to say as far as Fillies go RUFFIAN is the greatest filly, so tragic that she was taken so early in her life. Then there are the colts and geldings. You have the Triple Crown Champions who have shown what true courage, heart and stamina are. Then there are those that came close like Silver Charm , Real Quiet and Funny Cide.  Then yu have the ones who never raced a TC race, but still did great things like Seabiscuit and Cigar , Lost In The Fog ...etc. I say any racehorse that shows the heart , determinations , corgae and strength to win can be considered the greatest. It's like asking who was the greatest baseball player ever. Some say the Babe , some say Mantle...etc it's all a matter of opinion and of course we can't forget those horses who were champions in other ways besides winning races, like Barbaro who brought the nation together in a way while he struggled with the break and laminitis , or Bold Ruler who battled cancer in the 70's ... like I said they are all great

There are so many! I like John Henry, Secretariat, Barbaro, Whirlaway, Assault (no one thinks of him) and Man O War!

My first one would have to be Seabiscuit. The little guy had leg problems for goodness sakes and he still came back and prooved everyone wrong.

My second one would be Secertariat. She won the Kentucky durby by how much? 32 lenghs? something like that and that is just amazing.

My third one would be Man O' War. There was this one race where they were bringing the horses up to the line (not a gate then) and Man O' War wasnt up there yet but they started without him anyways. After he caught up to all of the horses he still came in second and I think that that is pretty cool.

I only go back to the early 70's but Secretariat was the best I ever saw. So many other great ones though John Henry, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, Seattle Slew,  Alysheba, Sunday Silence,..............
