  1. I think you are thinking of Girolamo Savonarola. But he lived in the 15th century.

    He took control of Florence after the Medici were overthrown in 1494. He is famous for having the bonfires of the vanities: where art, literature, fine clothing, and anything that was considered too luxurious and not Christian enough were piled together and set on fire. I wouldn't call Savonarola necessarily mad, just a religious fanatic who thought the end of the world was at hand and that he had to forcefully purify the world (alright, maybe he was a little mad).

    Anyway, he was excommunicated by the Pope, and tortured and executed by the Catholic Church for challenging their authority, and the Medici returned to power.
