  1. George Washington!!

  2. Songbyrd 11 has it precisely right, and is one 10-point-deserving woman. It's just one of those trick questions which, like all such questions, contains, well, a trick. The silver lining is that it gives some attention, at least, to the government created under the Articles of Confederation, a bump in the road to the creation of the United States of America that is more than just a footnote but less than important.

  3. Under the Articles of Confederation the United States was not one country. That's why they were called "states". They were independent countries. They formed a "confederation" which is a collection of states to declare their independence from Great Britain. They were called the "united" states. That is 13 little countries fighting together for independence. Then after the war they met in Philadelphia after the war "in order to form a more perfect union". They wanted a stronger union. And so they formed a government under the Constitution and established a "federation" to replace the "confederation". The name "United States" was used for the new country. It was to be one nation instead of 13. The first Presifent of the new nation was George Washington.  The previous nine guys were presidents of Congress. They had no power and were presidents in name only. It was an honorary position. I hope that this has been a help to you.

  4. This is an excellent question, despite what folks may think. We are of course taught that WAshington was the first president of the US, which is accurate when we discuss the Constitutional US. Which is to say the US after the Constitution was written and ratified.

However, people do not realize that there were men leading the country prior to Washington. These were the presidents of the Congress, first the Continetal Congresses and then the United States in Congress Assembled. The first two, the First Continetal Congress and the Second Continetal Congress, were the government of the 13 colonies during the Revolution. The United States in Congress Assembled, also known as  the Congress of the Confederation, was the federal government following the Revolution. In otherwords it was the federal goverment of the Articles of Confederation period in US history.

The First Continetal Congress can claim two men as it's presidents. The first was Peyton Randolph, who was president from September 5, 1774 to October 21, 1774. He was then followed by Henry Middleton, president of the Continetal Congress from October 22, 1774 to the end of the First Continetal Congress on October 26, 1774.

The Second Continetal Congress began May 10, 1775 with Peyton Randolph returning as it's first president. Randolph left the position on May 23, 1775 to be replaced the following day by the Second Continetal Congress's most well known president and the first man to sign the Declaration, John Hancock. Hancock's presidency was the longest, lasting from May 24, 1775 to  October 31, 1777. He was then followed by Henry Laurens whose presidency ran from November 1, 1777 to December 9, 1778. On December 10, 1778 John Jay became the fourth president of the Continetal Congress, leaving office September 27, 1779. He was then followed by the fifth and final president, Samuel Huntington, whose presidency lasted from September 28, 1779 to March 1, 1781.

On March 1, 1781 the Articles of Confederation were ratified, and on March 2nd the United States in Congress  Assembled became the federal government. Huntington then became the first US president under the Articles of Confederation, with his presidency beginning the very day the Articles of Confederation were reatified (March 1, 1781). He was then offically followed by nine other men:

    Thomas McKean (July 10, 1781 – November 4, 1781)

    John Hanson (November 5, 1781 – November 3, 1782)

    Elias Boudinot (November 4, 1782 – November 2, 1783)

    Thomas Mifflin (November 3, 1783 – October 31, 1784)

    Richard Henry Lee (November 30, 1784 – November 6, 1785)

    John Hancock (November 23, 1785 – June 5, 1786)

    Nathaniel Gorham (June 6, 1786 – November 5, 1786)

    Arthur St. Clair (February 2, 1787 – November 4, 1787)

    Cyrus Griffin (January 22, 1788 – November 2, 1788)

At the time Hancock became a president of the United States in Congress Assembled he was in failing health and could not sit as president. Though he was offically the president, his seat was filled by two men who were given authority to speak for him These were David Ramsay (November 23, 1785 – May 12, 1786) and the very man who would become the next president, Nathaniel Gorham (May 15, 1786 – June 5, 1786).

After the Constitution was ratified on June 21, 1788 the position of the President of the United States in Congress was abolished. In April of 1789 the first man elected president of the Constitutional US, George Washington, took the oath of office and became President of the United States.

  13. Hold on.  Mark has heard stories that Washington was not the first President of the US.  The answer  is that he was, but people like to bring up the Article of Confederation, where there were earlier Presidents, but they were Presidents of Congress Assembled.  They were not executives as are the Presidents.

Also, all 13 States had ratified the Constitution while Washington was President, so it was not John Adams, and using that theory, the first President of the USA is Ike since he was the first President of all the 50 States.
