  1. The Norfolk boxer Jem Mace was heavyweight champion in uk and the USA before John L Sullivan . and so was the first World Champion.  He became champion in USA by beating Tom Allen in New Orleans 1870.    JLSullivan was the first american-born world champion.

    From the mid 19th Century it was British or American fighters.

    John L Sullivan came along in the late 19th Century.
