There were two great Tudor Monarchs 'Fat' King Henry V111 and 'The Virgin' Queen Elizabeth 1.

If there was 'fast food' in those days Henry would have gorged himself silly!.

Elizabeth simply wasn't a virgin , she had several fellas to 'keep her company' as they say!.

I'm going for Elizabeth on this one , a great leader.

  1. 10 Reasons Why Elizabeth I Was Great

    1. She was The Virgin Queen, Gloriana, or Good Queen Bess, and was immortalised by Edmund Spenser as the Faerie Queene (she remained unmarried because she was determined to turn England into a great nation on her own without a man).

    2. She was the first and last female monarch from the House of Tudor to rule as a protestant queen.

    3. She reigned for almost 45 years, during a period marked by increases in English power and influence worldwide, as well as great religious turmoil within England.

    4. Elizabeth's reign is referred to as the Elizabethan era or the Golden Age of Elizabeth. Playwrights William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Ben Jonson all flourished during this era; Francis Drake became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe; Francis Bacon laid out his philosophical and political views; and English colonisation of North America took place under Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Humphrey Gilbert

    5. Elizabeth was a decisive ruler. Her favourite motto was video et taceo ("I see and keep silent"). This quality, viewed with impatience by her counsellors, often saved her from political and marital misalliances.

    6. She created The Act of Uniformity 1559, to which she gave assent shortly after ascending the throne, required the use of the Protestant Book of Common Prayer in church services.

    7. She was the first Queen to assumed the title "Supreme Governor of the Church of England", rather than "Supreme Head", primarily because several bishops and many members of the public felt that a woman could not be the head of the Church.

    8. She created The Act of Supremacy 1559 was passed requiring public officials to take an oath acknowledging the Sovereign's control over the Church or face severe punishment.

    9. She made a famous Golden Speech to Parliament in November, 1601, the 68-year old monarch promised reforms and reflected on her long reign when she became unpopular.

    10. Elizabeth was a successful monarch, helping steady the nation even after inheriting an enormous national debt from her sister Mary. Under her, England managed to avoid a crippling Spanish invasion. Elizabeth was also able to prevent the outbreak of a religious or civil war on English soil.

  2. None of the above.  Henry VII (7th) was by far better than his son and granddaughter.  He subdued the entire country under his firm rule and left it stable and rich.  He united the Welch and English and had support of much of Ireland, something that could be said about few English (or British) kings.

Henry VIII squandered much of the wealth and only got it back by raiding the church, another reason for his going protestant.  He also wasted resources fighting with his nephew King James of Scotland.

While Elizabeth brought some stability back to England, many of her achievements were brought about by good luck as much as by her leadership.  She followed in her father's foottsteps by being a brute.  She was unwilling to discuss the succession, something that could have caused a civil war, until she was literally on her death bed.

  3. Queen Elizabeth I. She had her own era: the Elizabethan one.

Plus, she brought her own people into a Golden Age. Can't get much better than that.

  4. of all of the Tudors.. neither I would go for Queen Jane, yes she was queen for only 9 days but it shows how the country was in turmoil and distress

And poor Henry VIII was not fat until the last few years of his life before that he was said to be quite the athlete and handsome

  5. I would have to say Elizabeth, she was a great leader as you say and I have great respect for her keeping her power and remaining single.

  6. Henry VIII was a syphilitic serial killing madman! Although Brits do have him to thank for the Church of England and the break from Rome.

While Bessie had a few quirks of her own (not least of all ordering the death of her own cousin and a penchant for lovely young men) she was generally considered a wise, fair ruler who had a huge effect on the expansion fo the British Empire.

My money is on Good Queen Bess.

    EDIT:

PS Jin, every British monarch had their own era - Georgian, Edwardian, Victorian etc

  7. The one which ruled for like three days...lady grey???

  11. Henry VIII - P.I.M.P.

  12. Henry VIII changed the course of English history drastically.
