Chris Hoy. Phelps won most of his medals in Freestyle and Butterfly, Usain Bolt just ran, he ran fast but he can only do sprint, not long distance or marathon. Hoy won all his medals in different events.

That is why he is better.

well its a well known fact that the 100m is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in any games ^being the worlds fastest man^, so for bolt to break the world record and to be the fastest man in the world basicly 'jogging' is just extraordinary + then he won 2 more gold medals aswell breaking futher world records.

what michael phelps did was fantastic also, but it wasn't a real shock that he won all 8 gold medals as it was highly predicted that would happen before the games started anyway.

so my vote is bolt is the man of the games, but both men are definatly the face of 2008 beijing olympic games.

Michael Phelps, no question.

He set the world record for both most gold medals at a single Olympics, and the most gold medals in a career at the Olympics.

Usain Bolt just set a few world track records. Not as hard as what Phelps did.

"Lightning" Bolt, he broke a record which had stood for 12 years, one that nobody else could touch, and apart from Bolt himself, one that is now likely to remain unbroken for even longer.

Bolt. His story as an olympian, as human being and as an athlete is simply amazing.

He came from extremely humble beginnings (could barely afford shoes to go to school), rose to stardom at an early age (16 years old), fell from grace in the 2004 olympics, and came back to reach the top of the world before he turned 22.

Who WOULDN'T celebrate such a journey? Those who criticize, are simply not aware of the human journey and what such a journey can do to the human spirit.

Phelps athletic performance was outstanding and exceptional, but USAIN BOLT's performance was a once-in-a-life-time sight to see. As the world finds out more about Usain in the weeks to come, they will grasp the true meaning of his celebrations.

Right now EVERY Jamaican is doing the 'Usain Bolt' dance in nightclubs in Jamaica...it includes the moves he did before the race where he rubbed his head with both hands. Its a mix of other Jamaican dances, 'nuh linga', 'sweep' and 'gully creeper'. Usain made these dance moves 'international' during his 'showboating'.

As an Olympian, Usain is more than just an athlete who 'edits' world records.

Well there are a number of titles out there to share. Greatest Gold medalist= Michael Phelps. Fastest man in the world= Usain Bolt. Strongest man in the world, the German Steiner(sp?), and best all around athlete--winner of the decathlon Bryan Clay.

Both are amazing athletes that won gold in all of the events they competed in, but for one reason I would choose Phelps, and that is because of his humility. Bolt is known for his showing off and grandstanding, (which I witnessed myself when watching his first race) whereas Phelps is just a wonderful representation of humility in his sport.

Bolt was never close to coming 2nd, whereas Phelps was.

People say Phelps is best because he won more medals, but a sprinter can only really win 3 (100m, 200m and 100m by 4 relay)

Phelps has won 14 Gold medals and 2 Bronzes over 8 years, but I think Usain can win another 2 or 3 in 2012, but Phelps can't!

Both of them!

both of them were amazing. both of them won gold in all their events, both of them did all world records (except phelps missed one). Both of them are streets ahead of the rest of their competition, and both of them have redefined their sport and the way it is done. To compare both of them to each other is like comparing chalk and cheese.
