  2. Nolan Ryan was not a great pitcher for the Mets, andWillie Mays  as a Met is one of the standard example always pointed to as a player that hung around way too long. You can't call Willie Mays a "Met Great".

    I would say Tom Seaver. For all-around talent as a ball player, I'd put Keith Hernandez up there. He was a very good offensive producer and a brilliant defensive first baseman.

    Not all of these guys had a lot of success with the Mets but the question asks for the "best overall player" not the "best overall Mets player".

  9. The answer to your question would be Willie Mays, but he was a Met for one awful season at the end of his career in which he should have retired. For players who actually had the best careers while they were in the Amazin's uniform, it would be Seaver.
