There was some Ali fight I saw as a child, around the mid-seventies, where he was just hanging on the ropes and sloshing around with his arms dangling. He was clearly making fun of his opponent, who was beckoning him with his gloves to come out and fight normally. I can't remember who his opponent was, except that he must not have been a very good fighter and that he was white.

  1. I hate to break it to you, but if it was the mid 70's, he may not have been faking.

It was the end of his career.

Maybeeee Ken Norton, but I doubt he would play with him.

Leon Spinks was barley in 78, so he was not really in shape to play around in the ring by the mid 70's.

    Maybe around 67'.

  2. in 1977, ali fought two televised exhibitions (with lyle alzado and mike dokes)....is this what you are looking for?

  3. I think your thinking of Earnie Shavers, but Ali wasn't pretending, Shavers hit Ali so hard, Ali was really wobbling.  Shavers wasn't sure if Ali was faking it or not, so he missed an opportunity to change history and Ali survived to win the fight.   Ali taunted dozens of his opponents by faking like he was wobbled, and Shavers thought that was what Ali was doing in their fight.  Truth was Ali was really in trouble, and Earnie made a mistake that cost him a place in boxing history.

  4. Ali did this with alot of fighters.  As blog says he probably wasn't clowning with Shavers because as we found out later Shavers clocked Ali with a shot in the second round and Ali says it took him pretty much the entire fight to get the cobwebs out.

  5. it was sonny liston that ali clowned on all the time
