Who was the comedien,who did a stand up routine on t.v. ,in the 60's just using a box of hats as a prop:

when I was very young I saw an act ,possibly on Ed Sullivan,the comic appeared on stage with just a box of hats he told the story of a night in a london pub,while switching hats as he did,he assumed each hat wearers voiceand personality it was very funny but I've never seen it since, it might have been. Benny Hill Does anyone else remember this?

  1. This would have been March 31st 1963 on the Ed Sullivan Show, and yes it was indeed Tommy Cooper performing his classic 'Hats' routine. Tommy was introduced by Sullivan as 'The funniest man ever to appear on this stage', Tommy having previously appeared on the show on the 24th of the same month.Tommy Cooper was regarded here in the UK as the funniest man who ever lived,and his death on live television on the 15th April 1984 shocked and saddened the entire country. There will never be another like him, and he remains my personal comedy hero.
