It was Charles Lindberg in 1927 in a Bell X-1 named the Spirit of St. Louis.  Lindberg went away from everyones advice about using a multi-engine plane, sticking to the single engine, claiming that the problem with a multi engine plane is that there is just more chances for there to be an engine problem.

  7. It was Charles Lindbergh flying the Spirit of Saint Louis, a custom monoplane built in Los Angeles by Ryan Aircraft.

    BTW the Bell X-1 was the first supersonic airplane, flown by Chuck Yeager in 1947.  It was rocket powered, flown after air drop by a B-29.
