  3. President Lincoln did play a major part in railroading, when he signed the "Pacific Railway Act" that brought about the construction of the trans-continental railroad.

    Lesser known, it was he who instituted charges for "demurage".  Demurage is a sort of fine that was imposed on railroads who did not return foreign line rolling stock to the home railroad in a timely fashion.

    I didn't know that Jackson was the first to ride along, now I do.  This is a great site for increasing one's knowledge.  But, did he ride on the locomotive, as posed in the question?  Until we can establish that fact, then the answers here, including this one, are incomplete.
