    and althea gibson-first female

  2. This is not a stupid question at all.

Althea Gibson was the first African American and the first African American female grand slam champion.

Arthur Ashe was the first Afro-American male grand slam champion.

"One of the first black players to draw national attention to the ATA was Ora Washington, who dominated the women's division with eight titles in the 1930s."

I think you will find this article http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-1575... very interesting. It named black tennis pioneering names like Oscar Johnson, Jimmy Mcdaniel, and C.O. Seames. Players and teachers that I'd never heard of.

  3. Actually, Arthur Ashe was not the first black tennis player. Althea Gibson was the first black tennis player. She is considered to be the "Jackie Robinson" of tennis, integrating the game in the early to mid 50's.

  4. Im not sure, theres not many black tennis players though James Blake, Serena/Venus Williams, Gails Monflis thats all i no of!

  5. althea gibson was the first black tennis player her era was in the 1950's... and after her followed arthur ashe...

  6. Althea Gibson was the first black tennis player to win tournaments like Wimbeldon.

  7. You should rather ask " Who was the first black champion of a major event"

Blacks were playing tennis as long as whites. We just weren't allowed on the same courts in the early days.
