  1. --Lillienthal or Chanute?

  2. You really have to ask if you are talking about flight in "heavier than air aircraft" or "lighter than air aircraft".

Orville Wright is credited as being the first (documented) to perform a SUSTAINED, CONTROLLED, POWERED flight in a "heavier then air" aircraft in 1903. (sustained, controlled, and powered are the key terms...unless you count some guy jumping off a bridge with a kite tied to his back:))

Really, there is documented (and undocumented) accounts of gliders, balloons, "wings", etc for years preceding, however, assuming you are speaking of actual "flying"..it's the good 'ole Wright brothers....

  3. Actually, the first human to achieve sustained flight was Daedalus.  He was imprisoned on the Greek island of Crete, and in order to escape, he fashioned wings for himself and his son, Icarus, from wax and feathers.  They flew away from the island, but Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax in his wings melted, and he crashed into the sea and died.

I guess you could say that Icarus was the first person to die in an airplane crash!

  4. The Wright brothers

  5. That is a complex question and you may not get a satisfactory answer here on Yahoo!Answers.  The best thing is to do what an experienced Internet user would do, which is to do an internet search on "first flight."

You can read the various stories and decide for yourself.   Good luck!

  6. wright brothers on Dec. 17, 1903, they made it near Kitty Hawk, N.C.
