  2. When I read the questions I don't usually read answers as to not be influenced.  I was going to make the Curt Flood point.  Something told me to look at the answers.  Of course, Utterchaos beat me to it.

I don't know the first person with a no-trade clause but Curt Flood was the first player to challenge being traded.  In October 1969 he was traded by the Cardinals to the Phillies and refused to report to the Phillies and brought his case all the way to the Supreme Court.  He sat out the entire 1970 season and was eventually traded to Washington after losing his case.  Although he lost he case, other players fought against the reserve clause and eventually the players would win out and could decide on which team they want to play for.
