  1. Derek came on as a substitute during the 1971 Scottish Cup Final for Rangers against Celtic and scored a last minute equalizer to earn a replay. Rangers lost the return match 2-1. The same year, another Scotsman Eddie Kelly was becoming the first scoring substitute in an English FA Cup Final for Arsenal against Liverpool. A year earlier, Johnstone at the tender age of 16, out-jumped Celtic’s legendary captain Billy McNeil to head the winning goal in the 1970 Scottish League Cup final which Rangers won 1-0.
