  1. Barbados is older than America! It is impossible for an American to have discovered it!

  2. Well prior to the British coming over, there were the natural inhabitants that may very well descended from the first Americans who are said to have crossed the Bering Strait from Asia. Apparently after they crossed the strait, they went to the most Northern Parts to the most southern parts. It was during the ice age for the most part.

  3. It is believed that Barbados was inhabited by the Arawaks around 600 B.C. but were driven off by the Caribs who themselves did not settle on the island. It is possible that Portuguese explorers could have landed on the island in the 16th century, however, an Englishman by the name of Thomas Warner discovered Barbados, Montserrat, Nevis and St. Christophers in 1625 and propiertorship was granted to the Earl of Carlisle. In 1625, also, John Powell visited Barbados and claimed it for England when he was returning to his homeland from Brazil. Upon arrival in England, Sir William Courteen wanted to colonise Barbados and sent John and Henry Powell (brothers) with about 100 settlers to do so.   On February 17th, 1627, the Powell brothers and the group of 100 landed in Barbados and established the first settlement, which they called Jamestown. (This site is the present day Holetown which is located in the parish of St. James).  Much more through the link below. It's interesting to note that the English were setting-up colonies in America during the same period of time, eg., Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Connecticut, & Rhode Island.
