  2. Jeannette Rankin was the first woman to hold a national elected office.  She was elected to Congress on November 7, 1916.  There were women appointed to lower offices of the U.S. government from the very start, such as Mary Katherine Goddard, U.S. postmistress in Baltimore from 1775 to 1789.
