  1. My favourite is Terry Downes who won the World middleweight championship in July 1961.

I met him once at a dinner in London to commemorate the birth of Jo Louis, most of the British World Champions were there.

Terry Downes is on my left and Alan Minter on my right.

He is a tremendous character, and because of hi looks he has played many 'bit' parts in films and TV, the best known was the 'Feerless vampire Killers' , he also played 'Purvis' in two episodes of 'The Bill' in 1990.

At 73, he is Britains oldest living world chamion.

  2. Roy Jones Jr. is the greatest middleweight of all time.

  3. Sugar Ray Robingson was the greatest middleweight

My Favortie Middleweight is Marvin Haglar

  4. Id go for Marvin Hagler, a great middleweight with an iron chin, coupled with excellent boxing skills, great stamina and a feirce punch...a rare combination.

Hagler beat very good opposition in Tommy Hearns, John Mugabi, Tony Sibson, Mustapha Hamsho, Alan Minter and Roberto Duran among others.

People also forget that Hagler beat some very tough fighters even before winning the title, such as Willie Monroe, Bobby Watts, Kevin Finnegan and Bennie Briscoe.

Personally, i think Hagler was robbed against Leonard, and against Antuofermo.

To me Robinson was better as a welterweight.

Monzon was a great fighter, but i feel Haglers level of opposition was generally better.

Hopkins was a boring fighter who fiddled and messed his way through his fights.

Roy Jones Jr was excellent, but i dont feel he was as domnant as Hagler, also, many of Jones best fights came at light heavy.

Fighters like Tommy Hearns, Nigel Benn, James Toney, Chris Eubank, Michael Nunn and Mike McCallum were all excellent middleweights, but none of them really dominated the division like Hagler, Monzon or Robinson.

Monzon beat Benvenuti and Hagler beat Duran and Hearns so i think theyre out of it.

  5. Roy Jones Jr. is not only the best middle weight who ever lived but he is the best fighter who ever lived we have never seen a fighter like him and I don,t think in our life time we will ever see any one like him again what an athlete. Speed power defence boxing ability ring smarts before he fought Traver he had never been hit and that is after coming down from heavy weight where he took off 25lbs of muscle with out a tune up fight and he was getting older but in his prime there was no one better sorry Marvin I love you but Roy would have given you a boxing lesson. Roy Jones knocked out Virgil Hill with a single body punch keep in mind you don,t knock out a world champion light heavy with a single shot to the body that is unreal and unheard of check out the punch he hit Vennie Pazz with a left hook where both of Roy's feet came off the canvas it was beautiful. I love you Vennie you had the biggest heart in boxing.

  6. Id have to opt for Mr invincible Carlos Monzon, the greatest middleweight Ive ever seen, rough, tough, stylish and built and punched like a heavyweight with hammers in his hands,7 years as champion and retired undefeated in 1977, he'd be more than a match for Robinson,Hagler,Hopkins and many others at middle,a truly outstanding fighter!!

  7. Carlos Monzon. he defended his title 14 times and then retired. He did loose 3 times, but they all came in his first couple of years, and then he just went on a tear of 70+ wins in a row.

  8. marvin hagler is the greatest middleweight of all time. probably the most complete fighter to step in the ring, balance, footwork, speed, punching power, chin, stamina, heart, killer instinct, marvin had it all in abundance. he had nearly 50 pro fights before he got a title shot. he defeated numerous philly middleweights, and philadelphia middleweights of the 1970's were about as tough as they come. by the time he was champion he was nearing the end of his career and made 11 title defenses against probably the best oppostition a champion has ever fought (hamsho, mugabi, hearns, a hall of famer, duran, a hall of famer) and his final loss was to sugar ray leonard,(hall of famer) and controversial one at that. he was never knocked out in his three losses, two by UD before he had 20 pro fights, and a SD to leonard after 66 pro fights and the wear and tear of 8 years as a middleweight champion, final record 62-3-2 (52 kos)

  9. ray robinson,

after that would be monzon, hagler, b-hop, jones jr, and walker.

  10. Jackie Gleason???

  11. Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest. Hagler was the hardest puncher. Duran was the most durable. Hearns was the best jabber and La Motta was the most aggressive. Calzaghe is the best of British and Benn was the best of the 80's era.
