  1. George I (George Louis; 28 May 1660 – 11 June 1727)

  2. George I (28 May 1660 – 11 June 1727) was King of Great Britain and Ireland. At the age of 54, he ascended the British throne as the first monarch of the House of Hanover. Though many aspirants to the throne bore a closer relationship to his predecessor, Queen Anne, his mother, Sophia, had been designated heir by the Act of Settlement 1701 because of her Protestant faith. Sophia predeceased Anne by a matter of weeks, leaving the Protestant succession to George.

George was born on 28 May 1660 in Osnabrück, Germany. He was the oldest son of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, a German prince, and his wife, Sophia of the Rhineland Palatinate. Sophia was the granddaughter of King James I of England through her mother.
