  1. Yes, this has happened many times before. The last player ever to switch from foward/defense to goalie was Jerry Toppazzini on November 16th, 1960 while playing for the Boston Bruins. Goaltender Don Simmons was injured in the final minute and with no other goalie avaiable, Toppazzini was sent to the net, becoming the last player in NHL history to be switched to gaolie during a game. Shortly after this, the backup goalie rule was implemented.
