The 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers were 12.5 games ahead of the New York Giants on August 12, and eventually lost.  

The Angels in 1995 were 9.5 games ahead on August 20th, but 12.5 games ahead of the team that beat them for the division (Mariners), and 12 games ahead of the team that beat them for the wild card (Yankees).

Last years Yankees were 7 games back at this point (they'd been 11.5 back earlier in the month), but they didn't beat the Red Sox... They were 6 games back in the wild card at this point, which they did win.

What about the Phillies last year?  That was a bigger slide for the Mets then the 1978 Red Sox.  I am unsure of the games behind the Phillies were thought.
