    Evolution is the first thing that comes to mind when his name comes up, but really he's more concerned with natural selection.  Basically, it's a biological process that occurs over hundreds of thousands of years in which the organisms with the traits best adapted to the environment will produce the most offspring.  It may cause other organisms relying on specific resources to become extinct or find other sources.  The best know example of his work is on birds.  He noticed how there were a ton of different species of birds, all finches, with different physical characteristics.  He determined that each island had different resources so each bird adapted to its specific niche.  Thus, a bird that ate small seeds had a tiny beak but birts that ate fruit had a larger beak, etc.
