  1. It's a pity you said "non-religious figures only" because undoubtedly Jesus Christ (whether or not you choose to believe in him) has had the greatest impact on the world. The greatest art, architecture and much of the world's finest literature and music has been dedicated to Him or has been produced as a result of his influence.

Apart from Jesus Christ, there have been many people who made an impact on the world but it is hard to choose any one individual, since many great men and women have built upon the foundations of others.

What this proves is that collectively we are greater than we are individually (which is a Christian teaching!)

Gutenberg's press certainly influenced the dissemination of ideas, but he himself was not a great philosopher or thinker.  It is the combination of ideas, their dissemination, scientific advances and social reform that has produced modern civilization.

the way you pose your question suggests that you are not a student of history and think of events as occurring in a vacuum, whereas in reality everything that happens is the result of many things that went before.

  11. I'm afraid you couldn't put it in this way. There are many more than just a single person. For example, Alexander the Great made an empire that lasted only 13 years but its impact on the ancient world lasted for ages.

Gutenberg proved that there is a way to turn lead into gold - by creating the printing press. Others, and others, and others did major discoveries. As sir Newton said: "I'm staying on the shoulders of giants".
